Senate President, David Mark, on Thursday reportedly visited
the Acting National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, Alhaji
Adamu Mu’azu, in his office at the national secretariat of the party in
Abuja.
Punch reports that the senate president visit was based on the demand for automatic tickets by some senators. It was also gathered that the Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN) was among the entourage.
Mark and the senate leader did not ride in his official car, and was not also followed by the usual heavy security personnel and motorcycle riders that normally lead his convoy. He was said to have hurriedly walked into the office of Mu’azu
as soon as he alighted from the car that brought him. He was followed by Ndoma-Egba, who is struggling to fly the senatorial flag of the party in his home state of Cross River.
Either, Mu’azu, Mark nor Ndoma-Egba, spoke with journalists on the outcome of the meeting which last for about 45 minutes. Ndoma-Egba, however, is struggling to fly the senatorial flag of the party in his home state of Cross River.
Meanwhile, a source at the meeting said Mark used the occasion to remind the party’s chairman about the need to favour some members of the Senate during the forthcoming primary aimed at picking senatorial candidates of the party.
“The Senate President used the occasion to appeal to the national leadership of the party to, at least, help the senators return as candidates of the party in order for the PDP and the Presidency to have a smooth Senate in 2015,” the source said.
The source further hinted that the meeting availed the guest the opportunity to discuss the alleged plan by some senators to present an impeachment notice against President Goodluck Jonathan on December 16, when the Senate resumes its plenary.
It was also gathered that the senate president promised to speak with the aggrieved senators, but asked the party to also ‘do the needful for the senators.’
In a related development, Mu’azu has inaugurated the committee that will handle the national convention of the party, which is slated for December 10 and 11 in Abuja. Speaking with the committee members, the chairman commended them for honouring the party’s invitation to appear for the inauguration despite the short notice.
Mu’azu asserted that the committee members have shown the party high level of commitment and loyalty and urged them to work together as a team in order to ensure a successful conduct of the national convention where President Jonathan will be formally ratified as the presidential candidate of the party.
The chairman revealed that the national leadership of the party had confidence in their ability to organise a hitch-free convention and assured them of the support of the party’s leadership.
Speaking on behalf of the members, the committee chairman, Dr. Haliru Mohammed remarked that the task before them was an overwhelming one that required them working 24 hours till the convention is done.
Mohammed assured that the task would be executed as the committee would commence work immediately they left the inauguration venue.
Some guests at the inauguration include some PDP governors and the Special Assistant to the President on Political affairs, Prof. Rufai Ahmed Alkali, who is also the Assistant Secretary of the committee.
It would be recalled that on Wednesday the senate President told Nigerians what they should do about the recent war against the Boko Haram insurgency ravaging the North-Eastern part of the country.
