A rap artist that gives the men of the genre a run for their money, there is no doubt that Nicki Minaj will be hugely popular for years to come.
BIO

She’s a hip hop recording artist who has worked with the likes of Diddy, Mariah Carey, and Lil Wayne. Welcome to Splendid.com and today we’re taking a look at the musical origins of Nicki Minaj.
Onika Tanya Maraj, better known as Nicki Minaj, was born on December 8th, 1984 in Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago. At the age of five, she moved to Queens, New York with her mother. It was here she attended high school, where she specialized in the arts, causing her to fall in love with music.
After singing with local rappers, she soon caught the attention of Lil Wayne and he signed her to his label, Young Money. She released several mixtapes, including 2007’s Playtime is Over, 2008’s Sucka Free and 2009’s Beam Me Up Scotty.
She also performed on several remixes, including T.I.’s “No Matter What.” As the underground music scene started to take notice of Minaj, she continued to refine the freestyling techniques that would set her apart from her fellow rappers.
Minaj would land on the music charts on several occasions during 2010. In the first half of the year, she was featured as a guest on songs such as Ludacris’ “My Chick Bad,” Trey Songz’ “Bottoms Up” and Jay Sean’s “2012 (It Ain’t the End).” The release of her solo single, “Your Love,” brought her to the top of the Rap Songs chart and made her the first unaccompanied female artist to reach that position in eight years.
In October, Minaj had another chart record. She became the first artist to have seven songs on the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time. This was thanks to collaborations with artists such as Kanye West and Sean Kingston, and the release of more singles, including “Roman’s Revenge” with Eminem, ahead of her debut album. A month later, her first solo effort, Pink Monday, debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200.
From the looks of it, things are just beginning for Nicki Minaj. The rapper burst onto the hip hop scene and quickly became an artist to watch as she teamed up with other musicians. Now, having already been declared the Queen of Hip-Hop, Minaj is giving her fellow female singers a run for their money as her solo career takes off.
After collaborations galore and the respectable success of her album Pink Friday in 2010, Nicki Minaj came back harder than ever with the release of Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded in April of 2012. Boasting hits like Stupid Hoe and Starships, the album went platinum. Not bad, Nicki.
Showing she’s more than a musical artist, Minaj took to the silver screen in 2014’s The Other Woman. Starring alongside the likes of Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton, Minaj played the assistant to Carly, an attorney that gets caught up in a relationship with a married man.
2014 also saw Minaj return with some chart topping hits, and Internet breaking music videos to accompany them. Titled The Pinkprint – as an homage to Jay-Z’s The Blueprint – Minaj’s lead single from the track, Pills N Potions, showed her musical portfolio was broader than her rapidfire rapping style she’s known for.
Reworking the music from Sir Mix-A-Lot’s Baby Got Back, Minaj released Anaconda in the summer of 2014. The track was well-received from fans, but it was the video that really got people talking. Booty? Check. Extremely useless undergarments? Check. Floor humping? Check. Sexual innuendos galore? Check. A Lap dance from Minaj herself to a wincing Drake? Check. Hey, at least she does her own stunts…
In 2015, Minaj was announced as one of the co-owners of Tidal, a high fidelity music and video streaming site co-owned by the likes of Jay-Z, Beyonce, Kanye West, Madonna, Arcade Fire, and many, many more high profile artists.
After getting engaged to boyfriend Meek Mill and bringing the Pinkprint tour to the world in 2015, becoming the face of Roberto Cavalli and much more, Nicki Minaj’s star has officially risen, and can only climb higher from here.
